The abaca plant (Musa textilis) was widely used during the 19th century in ships’ rigging and continues to be used in handicrafts, textiles, tea bags, and currency notes. As the country’s largest producer of world’s strongest fiber, continued efforts in educating the public about the stories and crafts involved in abaca is being held annually through this activity, which is intended for students and teachers under Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track. It intend to bolster the sense of indigenous identity while promoting women empowerment and cultural heritage.

A special guided spotlight tours designed and intended for the celebration of National Heritage Month in relation to its theme “Change and Continuity”.

The tours will be conducted simultaneously in all central museums of NMP in Manila

The activity is a half-day lecture and demonstration on Filigree Tambourine-making. It highlights one of the living cultural treasures of the Province of Ilocos Sur, a kind of craft-making in the Philippines traced during the Spanish colonization. This activity is a combination of sharing of the history of tambourine-making in the Province as well as its significance to the tambourine makers. An actual demonstration and try-outs by the participants will be conducted after the lecture.

One of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Eastern-Northern Mindanao is “suyam”, the embellishment of their clothing with embroidery. This thriving tradition is still being practiced by some women Manobos in Agusan del Sur & Agusan del Norte. The activity is a way of promoting the craft and tradition for its preservation for the next generation. The activity shall aid in educating the people, especially the youth, and foster their awareness of both the tangible and intangible heritage of the Agusan Manobo cultural group. This shall also be an opportunity to recognize and support the role of the women cultural workers in preserving local tradition and draw the interest of museum-goers in the importance of protecting the culture and heritage.

The lecture and workshop shall also serve as a corollary activity of the recently opened exhibit entitled, “Panapton sa Lumad: Mga Arte ug Kailhanan (Lumad Textiles: Artistry and Identity)”.

The activity features one of the weaving traditions in Marinduque, the Buntal Weaving. It aims to promote and highlight this local tradition in the region at the same time give support to the local weavers, especially the women behind the transmission of continuity of the said tradition.

Buntal fiber comes from the buri palm tree and are transformed by loom weavers to export quality bags, placemats, table runners, blinds among others.

In celebration of International Museum Day 2023 and National Heritage Month 2023, the National Museum Central Visayas in Cebu aims to convey the message of taking care of the nation’s built heritage through a lecture on the history of the Cebu Customs, its restoration, and its impact on uplifting lives of the local community in accordance to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Aduana of Cebu or the Cebu Customs House was restored to become the new National Museum of the Philippines in Cebu. Historically, the Aduana building was established during the American Occupation in accordance with the City Beautiful Movement that aimed to improve the lives of the Cebuanos through an organized urban planning.

The whole day activity will have a lecture-demonstration workshop and a short film viewing. It is a partnership activity between National Museum staff and teachers. The Museum staff will be the resource speakers and documenters while the class adviser/subject teachers will act as facilitators. A lecture on basic concepts and processes in weaving shall be introduced after a short pre test. The lecture will be followed by a demonstration on basic weaving before the Grade schoolers make their own workshop with the guidance of the museum staff. A return demonstration will be conducted by the selected participants before the post test and evaluation will be done.

The activity is part of the Gender and Development Program of the National Museum that aims to address issues affecting women, especially those who are working and are affected by the pandemic. Invited local artist will facilitate the workshop and will make use of art as therapy for the participants.

The activity is part of the program of the museum in Universal Accessibility that is intended for promoting the museum as a safe and active space for all sectors of society.

Bahandi hon Butuan is a Butuanon phrase that means ‘treasures of Butuan’.

A large volume of trade ceramics attests to the remarkable aspect of archaeology and ethnology in Northeastern Mindanao. The trading of ceramics was a basic element of coastal relations with the interior population. A quantitative survey of imported ceramic/pottery finds in Butuan are mostly from China, dating from the 10th to 15th centuries CE. The discovery of the ancient boats and the settlement site established Butuan as an advanced transit port and/or trading center in Mindanao.

The activity is designed to raise awareness of kids to the culture and heritage of the Filipino People with the Lakbay Kultura Educational Program of the National Museum of Anthropology. The activity will be attended by 30 children aged from 7-12 years old.

The Summer Camp will be a 5-day event where young students and budding scientists (Grades 9-10) will explore the ancient natural world through fun activities inside and outside the National Museum. They will be guided by museum experts and be provided opportunities to hone their scientific observations through up-close encounters with the National Geological and Paleontological Collections, and hands-on laboratory and field activities. They will also get to know some positive career role models in the field of geology and paleontology.

The seminar is a one-day in-person activity at NM – Butuan. Expected participants are key players on heritage protection from the barangay, city, and other government agencies, the academe, the media sector, and the civic society. Invited experts will serve as resource persons to discuss the following topics: 1) The Balangay’s Boatbuilding Tradition, 2) The Making of the Replica Balangay and its Voyage, 3) Butuan’s Maritime Trade Relations, and 4) Conservation and Promotion of the National Cultural Treasure.

The activity is the initial conduct of the Dress-up Learning Program of the NM Western-Northern Regional Museum, which primarily aims to highlight the Mindanao traditional clothing, which will feature the “Badju: An Introduction to Yakan Traditional Clothing,” The Dress-up Learning Program is an educational and interactive activity that aims to deliver information on Philippine traditional clothing specifically in Southern Mindanao, the customary relation of their cultural cloth and livelihood, and the importance of preserving the traditional production of local textiles.
