In 2017, the 50-year usufruct agreement was signed by the National Museum of the Philippines and the City of Dumaguete.
With an approved budget of P50 million for restoration, the 16th National Museum in the Philippines to rise in the City of Gentle People, Dumaguete City has come into realization.
The Old Presidencia Building designed by renowned Filipino architect Juan Arellano built in 1937 is now the home of the museum in Dumaguete.
The Old Presidencia Building declared last 2019 as an Important Cultural Property (ICP) was an adaptation of Juan Arellano’s mixed local and western, neoclassical architectural style prevalent during the American period. In fact, the Old Legislative Building in Manila which is now the National Museum of Fine Arts was also a masterpiece of Juan Arellano.
In November 25, 2022, the City of Dumaguete took pride during the opening of the 16th National Museum of the Philippines – Dumaguete.
Delighted to bring out the original glory, beauty and design of Juan Arellano, the National Museum of the Philippines through Director General Jeremy Barns expressed his gratitude to their partners in its venture of bringing another historical milestone to the people of Dumaguete and its neighboring towns.
A destination of culture, the National Museum – Dumaguete showcases “Kabilin sa Kinaiyahan sa Negros” featuring the natural heritage in geology, zoology and botany, the region’s finest archeology named as “Ang mga Lubong sa Banga” and “Karaang Edipisyo” through architecture highlighting built exhibitions.
