The Philippines at the Crossroads of Ivory Trade
The Philippines at the Crossroads of Ivory Trade is a permanent exhibition centered at the use of ivory (or “garing” in Filipino) as an exotic and priced commodity in the Philippines. Ivory, considered from prehistoric to contemporary times to be one of the most valuable commodities among wealthy buyers because of its clean white color and other unique characteristics, became the material of choice in for a wide range of items such as implements, miniature figurines, ornaments, buttons, decorative components of furniture, musical instruments, and religious images. The exhibition generally features archaeological evidences of extinct elephant species found in the Philippines. It also showcases other sources, substitute, and products made out of ivory.
While the use of ivory has been part of the Philippine heritage, the National Museum of the Philippines takes part in the global action against ivory trade which endangers elephants worldwide
