Lectures and Demonstrations on Textile and Basket Weaving

Date: May 19 and 20, 2022

The National Museum of the Philippines-Cordillera Regional Museum in Kiangan, Ifugao, in collaboration with the NMP Gender and Development Focal Point System (GAD-FPS) and Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement (SITMo), will be conducting a lecture-demonstration on Ifugao textile and basket weaving on May 19 and 20, 2022 at the Indigenous Peoples Education (IPED) Center at Poblacion, Kiangan, Ifugao.

The event will feature members of the Kiyyangan Weavers Association, who will share how they learned the craft and how they were eventually empowered through weaving. This is in line with the  aim to highlight the role of women in safeguarding and transmitting intangible cultural heritage, particularly Ifugao textile and basket weaving traditions. Mr. Marlon M. Martin, the Chief Operations Officer of SITMo, will moreover impart related experiences from his decades-long involvement at the forefront of Ifugao and Cordillera heritage advocacies.

Also to be conducted as a workshop, this activity will enlist the participation of the community’s youth to encourage and inspire young learners, researchers, and culture enthusiasts on Ifugao weaving not only to appreciate the rich culture that the crafts reflect, but more so to actively engage in the efforts to safeguard such heritage and ensure their preservation.

The two-day activity is also your #NationalMuseumPH Cordillera’s way of promoting women weavers in the Cordillera who were not spared from the financial crisis and other setbacks brought about by the pandemic. Sustaining the quality of their work up to the present amidst different challenges, the women’s craft greatly contributes to the continued appreciation especially of the woven textiles’ cultural significance among the Ifugao, as well as their relevance to Cordillera and Filipino cultural identities. Remarkably, the Ifugao weavers’ products have also been acknowledged by international textile enthusiasts for their exceptional artisanship.

The lectures and demonstrations will be conducted for free.
