Acanthophora spicifera (Vahl) Boergesen


This species is the only source of the third type and most important carrageenan, the LAMBDA carrageenan.

Thallus succulent, spreading, up to 15 cm high, loosely branched, with small discoid holdfast; terete branches thickly covered by spirally-arranged branchlets bearing short spine-like growths characteristic of this species. The cartilaginous thallus which is light to dark brown when exposed to strong sunlight becomes yellow or pink in reduced lights. Growing in various situations ranging from muddy to sandy and rocky conditions in inter- tidal areas
